I am a landscape painter, with deep roots in the Tidewater region of Virginia.
I painted watercolor landscapes for many years but became bored with realism
and began to simplify my compositions. A rafting trip through the Grand Canyon
introduced me to the western landscape. My paintings became more simple in composition but more complex in color and texture. I needed a larger format and began working in acrylic on canvas, with intuitive reflections of landscape elements. They are not site specific but relate to my impressions of the landscape around me. I apply paint with a palette knife and dig and scratch into the wet surface to reveal the layers beneath. Edges and texture are important elements of my work.
